When teachers use questioning to check for comprehension teachers will only know the student’s surface level knowledge. A vast majority of questions asked by teachers are low level that require students to focus on memorization and recall of factual information rather than focusing on questions that foster deep student understanding (Leven and Long, 1981). The challenge is to go beyond measuring comprehension and use questioning as a means to measure deep understanding. Questioning can also measure understanding. Questioning can be a great motivator used by teachers to get the students interested in the lesson they are about to learn. Teachers use motivation to prepare the students for learning, pique student interest in the lesson, make connections to student’s lives or the world around them, or simply to challenge or puzzle the students to excite them to discover the answer throughout the lesson. One purpose of questioning is to motivate students. What is the goal you want to achieve through asking questions in class? There are several reasons teachers ask questions in class. There are three factors that can assist in the process of asking questions that will foster a deep understanding of the skills, knowledge and concepts being taught defining the purpose for questions, creating awareness, and engaging all learners in questioning. With questioning being the activity that teacher complete the most in class, it also provides the greatest opportunity to foster rigor and deep understanding. Without putting proper thought into the questions that will be asked teachers may unintentionally ask inadequate questions and therefore will not foster a deep understanding of the skills and concepts being taught.
